10. Amsterdam, Netherlands
Amsterdam has everything except for the beaches and tropical weather, but if you’re looking for a place where most illegal things are legal, this the spot for you. It’s not cheap, but it’s worth giving it a try. Although Amsterdam is usually seen as a soft-drug infused and hedonistic place, this is just a small part of the whole. Flying from the U.S. can be expensive, but some travel deals can be found. Traveling from within Europe is much cheaper, as low cost airlines with routes to Amsterdam abound, or it’s a short train ride away from many European cities.
Amsterdam has a rich cultural, political and architectural history. It has the red-light district where prostitution is legal and men can basically choose anything they want, but the city also has museums, canals, and beautiful architecture. If you wander the streets, you’ll discover the treasures Amsterdam has to offer – music festivals, an outdoor cinema, all kinds of bars, restaurants, and much more. Like Montreal, Amsterdam is best visited in warm weather, as the winters can be bleak.
