If you thought you needed to go to Europe to visit castles and their awe-inspiring grounds, think again. America is home to a number of exquisite castles, some of which have been converted to inns. At Thornewood Castle in Lakewood, Washington, guests can slumber in this 400-year-old English Tudor Gothic castle.
The Thornewood castle was commissioned by Mr. Chester Thorne as a gift for his new bride, Anna in 1907. However, the original manor was in England. Mr. Thorne had the Elizabethan manor shipped, brick by brick, to Washington, where it was reconstructed according to Thorne’s specifications. Since then, the castle has been carefully restored to include 54 guest rooms and vacation rental properties. On the three acre estate, guests can also enjoy the gardens, private beach and lakefront views.
A stay at Thornewood promises serenity and romance, as guests as transported back to a time when this manor was lovingly constructed. Antiques and period details are abundant throughout the castle, with over 100 pieces of medieval stained glass and oak paneling and staircase still in tact. Book a room at Thornewood to stay at the only private castle on the west coast. Rooms start at $267 per night and can be booked on the Thornewood Castle website.
